Tropical Canna’s  a Multitude of Colors, a Multitude of uses.

Sometimes it is easy to think of canna’s planted in a traditional way (whatever that may be for you), however the Tropical Canna is quite versatile.  It can be planted in the landscape, in pots, or even in the pond.  When planted in the landscape they are quite showy as an accent plant with a huge burst of color that likes to hang on for a long time.  They also make a dynamic vertical element when used in a container.  When I am designing containers, I often visit our “Water Table” which carries a nice line of canna in 4” pots and a wide variety of leaf and bloom colors. the 4” size is potted for the pond, but also proves to be the perfect size to add to a container.

What you need to know about Canna’s:

·         They are tropical and will not winter over outside in our climate.

·         The Plants should be deadheaded for continual bloom

·         Not often bothered by problems.

·         Fertilize often especially in mid summer.

·         To winter over -  Allow the foliage to be killed by a frost.  Dig the plants, leaving soil attached to the rhizome.  Allow to dry, then pack in plastic bags with some moisture.  Keep in a cool location for winter.

·         You can also bring canna’s inside and treat them as houseplants during the winter months.
